Q. Is it haram to use illegal software?

Using illegal software, especially the operating system, is quite common among home user.
Has anyone come across any fatwas regarding this issue?
What is your personal opinion ?

Salaam,

Ilegal software is as good as stealing, no doubt about that to be honest haha :)

And seriously, a fatwa on stealing softwares, well, is not seriously needed as the answer should considerably leads to the obvious.

But it does presents a reality on the other side; illegal software remains a thorn on the world software industry. The rising cost, the ridiculous branding, and marketing makes original softwares seems almost incapable and impossible for typical home users to afford. Yet, the side note, these softwares are important to many working sectors and users, which affected home or individual users so much as to illegally acquire softwares online or DVD/CDs to cope up with their own problems and requirements, most espceially students. :)

I guess the world industry needs to address this issue more deeply on the rise of such problems, especially with the rising gap of income, economic downturn and demands of social life.

That is good opinion,z, especially on the addressing of such sensitive issue. It does affect alot of us, regardless of the working class, age or opinions

These days there are alternatives to original softwares.

such as MS Office - you can use Open Office

Photoshop - you can use GIMP..

Then there tons of softwares less than $100.

Its matter of picking them up and using them.

Yeah Fadzuli,
I have used Open Office and Gimp. They are almost as good as MS Office.
I tried Ubuntu Linux which is free, but have problems with the drivers. Cannot get the wireless working on my laptop, and cannot get the sound card working for my desktop.
I installed Ubuntu inside Win XP , so that I can choose which one to use.
