Q. Treatment of converts from Muslim in Singapore...

I was pondering at Mehboob's question on "Theory or Practice First" and rethinking on Dr Jeffrey Lang's book "Losing My Religion A Call of Help" and not help not to re-wonder (not the first and probably not the last time), are Muslim putting less attention on the issues and wellbeings of converts as they became Muslims?

How much do Muslims understood the issues of converts in Singapore, and how much have born-Muslims contributed to this issue? How does this affect our da'wa as Muslims in Singapore, especially as a minority (and arguably diverse with both foreigners and expats).

Salam Fariz.

I think this is a very good question to ask yet difficult to answer .. :)

i try to answer this question to my best of ability..

The thing is that we must look at the Muslim people in Singapore first before looking at the Muslim converts.

It is not surprising that some of the converts might be a better muslim than the born muslims...

taking that into mind, there is a need to see what are the issues that these converts faced. i think in my understanding, there is the issue of some sterotyping ( you just become a muslim - what do you know ) or maybe some family adjustments because other family members might mot be a muslim.

In my opinion, i dun think the Muslims might understand these issues unless they heard of friends which have this problem since we have not experience the problems stated.

The born Muslims might not have contributed to the problems, but maybe might not have helped these muallafs to adjust to their new faith... . though some organisations like darul arqam might have helped these people, these organisations are scarce.

i think if we failed to help these new Muslims who had voluntarily accepted Islam, there might be more challenges ahead.. this is because since we failed to address these issues, we also might have difficulties preaching Islam as a good faith. there is need a way to show all people out there that Islam is a good faith...

if we could take good care of out wellbeings as a muslim , we could certainly could take care of these converts. Unfortunately, the born Muslims today do not even understand Islam well.... <sigh>
