trimming is allowed, shaving it all off for a clean-cut look is allowed too. =) whatever you feel comfortable with.
as you have mentioned, its a sunnah. dont worry too much on your facial hair.

There are different opinions and schools of thought on this.

some thoughts and further reading material:

It is said to fulfil the category of the beard being Wajib it must be one fist full; anything beyond that is sunnah. One should comb, oil and tame his beard so as to look nicely presentable as prophet Muhammad (saw) did.

ref: http://www.theprophetmuhammad....

also see:

* Hanafi madhab:

To trim the beard when it is less than a fist’s length, as done by some modern people and hermaphrodites is not permissible in the opinion of all the jurists. To shave the beard as done by unorthodox Jews, Hindus and others is also not permissible.
(Durre Mukhtar)

* Maliki madhab:
To shave the beard is haram and to trim it in such a manner that it changes one’s natural and normal facial features is also haram. It is also quoted in Kitabul Ib’daa’, that without doubt the four Madhabs are agreed that the beard should be lengthened and that shaving it is haram.

* Shafe’ee madhab:

It is quoted in Al Ibaab’, that Imaam ibn Ar’rifaah says that Imaam Shafe’ee, in his book, Kitabul Umm, has categorically stated that shaving the beard is haram.

Al Azraiy says that the correct position in the Shafe’ee madhab is that to shave the beard without a valid medical reason is haram. Similar verdict of prohibition has been issued by Zarakhshi, Baihaqi in his book, Shu’ab Al Iman, and by his teacher Qa’ffal Shashi in Muhasin As Shar’iyyah.

* Hanbali madhab:

It is narrated in Shar’hul Muntahaa’ and Shar’hul Manzoomatul Adaab, the most accepted view is that it is haram to shave the beard. Some Ulama like the author of ‘Insaf’, have categorically stated that it is haram. There is no report from anyone to the contrary.

I think it is just some opinions from different madhabs.

I know sheikh's and ustazs who don't have beards too.

Maybe you can ask them in a polite way for their reasoning on this.

I think it could be based on Fiqh. "Difficulty gives rise to ease"

For eg. if a country banned the hijab for women and growing of beards for men, does that mean we leave the country, stop going outdoors, stop earning a living for our family? No, they are scenarios where you can give priority to reasons like above, and in times of difficulty pause wearing the hijab, keeping a beard etc.

Well, his question is actually whether he can trim his beard or not. He has kept it for 15 years and never used a scissor on it!

There are actually many opinions regarding this and also it depends which mazhab you belong to. If you search the Net you can find lenghty articles and arguments about this.

In my opinion, it is strongly recommended to grow a beard and it should be well-kept in accordance with the general Islamic standard of beauty. The Prophet did allow people to groom the hair and beard, so you should trim your beard to make it neat and well kept.

I also observed that many ulamas and religous teachers who have beards, do keep their beards neat and well trimmed.

excerpt from www.islamqa.com

Praise be to Allaah.

There is no recommended or specified length of the beard, because nothing to that effect has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). What has been reported is that the beard should be left as it is.

Muslim (2344) reported that Jaabir ibn Samurah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to have a very hairy beard.”

An-Nisaa’ (5232) reported from al-Baraa’ that he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a thick beard; according to another report, he had a bushy beard; according to another report, he had a wide beard.

Some scholars permit cutting the hair of the beard that exceeds the amount that may be grasped in the fist, because Ibn ‘Umar did this; but most of the scholars regard this as makrooh, which is more apparent because of the reports referred to above.

Al-Nawawi said: the best is to leave it as it is and not touch it or shorten it at all. (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 8/39).

- As for the hadeeth, “He used to reduce the length and width (of his beard)” – this is a false and fabricated hadeeth.

See al-‘Ilal al-Mutanaahiyah by Ibn al-Jawzi, 2/686

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allaah and the Last Day…” [al-Ahzaab 33:21]

“And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it).” [al-Hashr 59:7]

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah preserve him) said: The definition of the beard as stated by the scholars of (Arabic) language is: the hair of the face, jawbone and cheeks, in the sense that all the hair on the cheeks, jawbone and chin is part of the beard and removing any of it is counted as a sin, because the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Let your beards grow,” “Leave your beards alone,” “Let your beards increase,” “Let your beards be full.” This indicates that it is not permissible to remove anything from the beard. But the sin may vary in degree – shaving the beard is worse than shortening it, because it is a more obvious contradiction of the Sunnah.

And Allaah knows best

With regard to the report narrated by al-Tirmidhi (may Allaah have mercy on him) which says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to remove something from the length and breadth of his beard, this is a false report according to the scholars, and it is not a saheeh report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Some people insisted on using this hadeeth as evidence, but it is not a saheeh report, because its isnaad includes ‘Umar ibn Haroon al-Balkhi, who is accused of lying.

So it is not permissible for a believer to follow this false hadeeth, or to use as a concession that which was said by some scholars, for the Sunnah is binding upon us all, and Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allaah”

[al-Nisa’ 4:80]

“Say: Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger, but if you turn away, he (Messenger Muhammad) is only responsible for the duty placed on him (i.e. to convey Allaah’s Message) and you for that placed on you. If you obey him, you shall be on the right guidance. The Messenger’s duty is only to convey (the message) in a clear way (i.e. to preach in a plain way)”

[al-Noor 24:54]

“O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination”

[al-Nisa’ 4:59]

Yes I agree that there are a lot of hadiths of which the prophet did reportedly say "let it grow" etc, but there is none which says "It is a sin to trim" or "it is forbidden" or "it is haram not to grow a beard". A sunnah is something very encouraged to follow but not a religous law. I think it is more of a cultural thing but not a religous decree for muslims to grow the beard.
Nevertheless, I agree that while you get extra points while keeping the beard, you will not be penalised or punished if you trim the beard - as long as it is not done in the spirit of defying the prophet but just a personal preference. Just like the other personal preferences of the prophet of which you will get extra points if followed but you will never be penalised or punished if you have your own preferences.
Just my opinion and understanding about this issue.
