anwyays, there are alot of information online where you can read and gain more ideas from.
(more info in what you are trying to do would be good. at least people who are reading this will know about your event)

another idea i would like to add is to make use of your school or work place to spread the word of your events. make use of spaces for you to put up posters and flyers.

Use blogs, forms, flyers and my-space, friendster, etc... Word of mouth is the best.

For starters , have a poster. From that poster you can print it as a flyers or normal posters to be placed at strategic places. You can also mass email the poster to everyone. Also , most organisations nowadays have blogs or websites. Contact the person in charge of the website and ask them to publicise the event for you in their site.

Another point to add is that to work on networking with everyone around you. Its useful if you have an event coming up. You'll know who to contact.

Focus on whom your end target audience it and then pick the media, the channel, etc. It pays to use a consultant if budget allows.
