Q. People's perception on kuda kepang

Salaam,
I just want to know what people think of Kuda Kepang performance.
Is it to you just an entertainment?
Or do you feel that there is something "deeper" to this art?
I heard that some part of the performance require the people to be in so what in a trance.
Just recently i was watching one performance and a small boy around the age of less than 12yrs, was in the so called "trance mood" ...
Is that ok?

for me, it is just a form of entertainment. i love watching the kuda kepang dance but not when they start going into trance.

but i do know some people who are so into these things. up to the point whereby they actually eat crushed glass and whatnots.

i read somewhere before that the "horses" has "spirits" which was "called" by the bomoh(Medicine man) before the start of the dance. so when they are too into the dance, these "spirits" will actually take over their body and thus explaining the trance-like state.

it is ok for us to just to enjoy/learn the dance. in fact, when i was in school, we actually learned the kuda kepang dance. strictly just the dance though.

it is actually syirik for one to go into those trance-like state when they do the dance.

There are many stories about kuda-kepang. Someone told me it can fly to the roof, other than eating broken glasses, when in a state of trance.

When jin take control of their body, they can do extraordinary things.

If they purposely invoke the help of jins to enhance their performance, then it is syirik.

I can't say it is entertainment since it involves something spritual like the Hindus carying the kavadi.

As a muslim we should not be performing anything that is shirk. Some would even avoid watching it as a form of entertainment. Surround your Iman with the good things and stay away form the bad and things which displeases Allah s.w.t.

Hi...
I wanna say it is shirik!!! But as for Entertainment wise, it is natural and Kupa kepang has been in this cultural many years already... Many of our religions, Islam, finds it interesting but wherelse some of them finds it shirik.
Just bear this in your mind, they are just performing some cultural ways of like entertain peoples that engage them to do. They get paid as you enjoyed seing them doing things where you don't normally sees. There's a lot of people who just don;t understand. You don't disturb them, and they just did'nt disturb you as well. Just don't provoke them while there are doing some things that you don't understand.
Cheers,
Reena

Reena,
If we do not understand, we have to find out more, not just to ignore it.
If we know it is syirik, we must discourage the practice. We do not want our young to get involve with something that is against the religion.

If kuda-kepang dance can be separated completely from its spiritual aspects, it would be just like other cultural dances, posing no harm. This is similar to practicing Yoga, without the spiritual stuff.

wa ' alaikumussalam
well.. the dance by itself is fine for entertainment purposes.Islam never discourage muslims from dancing. However, when the 'so called' ritual is being cast upon the victim it becomes forbidden (haram) because summoning "jin" to posses human is absolutely wrong.Well kuda kepang had been banned in the 1990s till lately due to this reason.Conclusively it is rare to see a kuda kepang performances with absolutely no ritual.Hence it is banned entirely.
