Why don't muslim eat PORK? Afraid? Why Halal?
Muslims are brought up not to eat pork cos they believe that pork meat is not healthy. What is it so? Because pigs tend to eat everything and anything ....... including manure!
"Halal" means that the animal is slaughtered according to muslim rites. It also applies on how food are prepared. Pork lard is tabu.
Muslims are not afraid of pork. They just dislike the smell and sight of pork meat.
Hi McBabi
Muslim are not afraid of pork. It's in our religion to not eat them coz they are not good for humans.
( we are just very health concious and love to eat clean food. :P )
Islam however allow to eat pigs if under certain circumstances.
Pork is unhealthy..etc etc. i'm sure you've heard of all the reasons.
plus a pig do not have a neck to cut through the jagullar vain so blood doesn't flows out.
We eat halal food/ meat that have been slaughtered according to the laws of the Quran. they are known to be the must humane way of slaughtering an animal. When an animal is slaughtered, the jugular vein is cut and the blood is allowed to drain from the animal
but please read the links below for your answer on pork and halal.

Good links by sultana, I think McBabi will find all he/she wants to know there.
@ paulchen: I don't think there is a strong connection between being Muslim and disliking the sight and smell of pork meat. It may just be coincidental. or built up as a result of learning that pork is haraam. I'm sure plenty of non-muslims are out there who can't stand the sight and smell of pork.
In fact I know muslims who like the smell and can stand the sight of pork, but don't eat it.
the correct question should be `why are jews, christians and muslims forbidden to eat pork.
the short and simple answer would be, because it's a commandment from God for us not to eat it.
we need not go into the medical or scientific reasonings (although there are many) as to why we cannot eat it.
Here's all you may need to know about Halal, Haram and Kosher:
Halal is an Arabic word meaning something ‘lawful’ or ‘permitted’ for Muslims. The opposite of halal is haram, which means ‘unlawful’ or ‘prohibited’. All those things and acts which the Lawgiver — who is Allah Almighty alone — has permitted are halal and all those things and acts which the Lawgiver has prohibited in an absolute way — such that anyone who transgresses this prohibition exposes himself/herself to the possibility of Allah’s punishment in the Hereafter and possibly to a legal punishment in this life as well — are haram. Another term to remember is ‘mashbooh’, which means ‘doubtful’ or ‘questionable’.
Allah has said in the Holy Quran: “O people! Eat from what is on the Earth lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Surely, he is to you all a clear enemy.†(Al-Baqarah: 168)
Islam — which culminated and was completed with the message of the Last Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him) — has directed man to every wholesome thing and made it halal, and has also warned him about every harmful thing and made it haram. Islam is perfect and no one has the right to legislate anything — especially in the area of halal and haram — anything once Allah has legislated an issue. Those who issue legislation which is at odds with Allah’s legislation are in the same category as Satan.
The Holy Prophet explained in a Hadith that when some Nasrani (followers of Jesus Christ — peace be upon him) leaders made things lawful and other things unlawful without authority from Allah and called people to follow them, that made them objects of worship, and to follow them in that was to worship them.
Because of this, to change Allah’s law in any way — whether to make the unlawful lawful or to make the lawful unlawful is all part is a major sin. Allah said: “O you who believe! Do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you and do not transgress. Surely, Allah does not love the transgressors. And eat from that which Allah has bestowed on you — lawful and good — and beware of Allah the One in whom you believe.†(Al Maidah: 77-78)
Believers are to partake of the good and the lawful which Allah has granted them. The halal is rightfully theirs in this world. The disbelievers get it in this life, but they have no right to it. We should not fall into the falsehood of those who believe in forgoing halal things and hope for them in the Hereafter. A believer should enjoy Allah’s good things in this life and in the Hereafter. It is the haram which he must forgo in this life and order to preserve his share in the Hereafter. A disbeliever may partake of both the halal and the haram in this life, but he has no share whatsoever in the Hereafter.
Allah said: “Say: who has prohibited Allah’s beauty which he brought forth for his servants and the wholesome provisions? Say: they are for those who believe in the life of this world, exclusively on the day of resurrection. Thus, we clarify our signs to a people who know. Say: my Lord has only forbidden obscenities — both the apparent and the hidden — and sin and transgression without right, that you should associate others with Allah, though He has sent down no authority for that and that you should attribute to Allah that of which you have no knowledge.†(Al Aaraaf: 32-33)
Manipulating what is lawful and what is prohibited at odds with Allah’s Law is one of the forms of attributing to Allah that of which one has no knowledge. Allah said: “Say: Do you see that provision which Allah has sent down for you and of which you have defined prohibited and lawful? Say: Did Allah grant you permission or do you concoct a forgery and attribute it to Allah?†(Yunus: 59)
So, while partaking off the halal and not neglecting his share in this life, a believer must also beware of the haram, lest he fall into some of it. This involves putting some distance between a believer and the haram. The Holy Prophet warned the believers about this in the following Hadith: “The lawful is clear and the prohibited is clear and between them are some unclear issues which most of the people do not understand. So, whoever steers clear of these unclear issues has obtained innocence for his deen (Islam) and his self-respect. And, whoever enters into the unclear issues, enters into the prohibited just like the shepherd who grazes his sheep around the royal pasture always about to graze on it. Surely, every sovereign has a forbidden zone. Surely, the forbidden zone of Allah is all that He has made haram. Surely, in the body there is a small chunk of meat. If it is wholesome, the entire body is wholesome and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Surely, it is the heart.†(Muslim and Bukhari) — S. K. Husain
To be concluded
Avoiding the haram is imperative on every Muslim and must not be taken lightly. The Holy Prophet warned that the Ummah would reach a state when the haram gets taken lightly. He said: “A time will come over the people when an individual does not worry about what he takes: is it from the lawful or from the prohibited?†(Bukhari and and Nasaai)
Committing the haram jeopardises one’s other actions and places them in danger of not being accepted by Allah. The Holy Prophet mentioned the traveller on a long journey (usually one whose supplication is quickly answered by Allah), but “whose food is haram and whose drink is haram and whose clothing is haram and who has nurtured himself on haram — so how could his supplication ever be answered?†(Muslim and Tirmizi)
Sufyan Ath Thawri said: “To spend of the haram in an act of obedience to Allah is like trying to clean soiled clothing with urine. Soiled is not cleaned except with water and sin is not removed except with the halal.â€
The terms halal and haram apply to many things and acts and are not limited to food and drinks, but here these terms will only be used for certain meat products and their ingredients and contact materials.
In Islam, all foods are considered halal except swine/pork and its by-products; blood and blood by-products; animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering; carnivorous animals, birds of prey and land animals without external ears; animals killed or slaughtered in the name of anyone other than Allah; and food that gets contaminated with any of the above. Food containing ingredients such as gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers, etc. are ‘mashbooh’ i.e. ‘doubtful’ or ‘questionable’, and in some case even haram.
Allah says in the Holy Quran: “He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and that on which any other name has been invoked other than Allah.†(II: 173)
Halal meat is easily available in all Arab, Islamic and Muslim countries, and even in some non-Muslim countries which have a fairly large population of Muslims. But in Western countries, particularly the United States, it is available in certain areas where Muslims live in large numbers. Where it is not available, many Muslims rely on ‘kosher’ meat.
The word ‘kosher’ does not appear in the Hebrew Bible, it is a rabbinic term which means fit. The Bible states that for an animal to be ‘kosher’ it must chew its cud and have split hooves. For fish, it must have scales and fins. Birds are listed in the Bible that are suitable to eat, they are not birds of prey. Jews, however, believe that ‘kosher’ is the oldest diet in the world and it began with the first humans, Adam and Eve, who ate a vegetarian diet of grains, fruits, and vegetables.
‘Kosher’ food is very common in the West. Every day, just about every consumer in America and throughout the Western world eats something that is ‘kosher’. Not only Jews but millions of Americans from all ethnic backgrounds and religious convictions look for the ‘kosher’ label on foods for reasons of health and quality. Today, there are over 30,000 different food products on the American supermarket shelf that are certified ‘kosher’.
The ‘kosherness’ of a food is indicated by a little symbol representing a particular agency’s certification that the food has been processed in accordance with the Jewish dietary laws. Simply put, kashrus deals with what foods may be eaten, what foods may be eaten together, and how those foods are to be prepared.
Many Muslims living in or visiting the West eat ‘kosher’ meat in the absence of Muslim-slaughtered halal meat. They justify their act saying that the ‘zabeeha’ (slaughter) by the People of the Book, i.e. Jews and Christians, is alowed in Islam and quote the following verse of the Holy Quran:
“...The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them.†(Al Maida: 5)
Although ‘kosher’ has the same meaning for Jews as halal has for the Muslims and there are also similarities between halal and ‘kosher’, there are many distinct differences between the two. This gives rise to the question whether ‘kosher’ food is halal and whether Muslims use it. Most Islamic experts have doubt about ‘kosher’ food and some even say it is not halal, hence Muslims should avoid it. They cite the following differences between halal food and ‘kosher’ food:
1) Jews no more pronounce the name of Allah on the animals while slaughtering them, but Muslims on the other hand must pronounce the name of Allah on all animals while slaughtering for the meat of the animal to be halal. Hence ‘kosher’ meat is not halal, or doubtful in th least.
2) Islam prohibits use of all intoxicants, including alcohol, liquor and wine, whereas Jews regards them as ‘kosher’. As ‘kosher’ foods may contain alcohol, they are not halal, experts say.
3) Gelatin is considered ‘kosher’ by many Jews regardless of its source of origin. As gelatin is prepared from swine it is not halal, they say.
There may be other differences between halal and ‘kosher’ that make the latter questionable for Muslims to consume, the experts opine.

8-) 8-) no offense or anything, this reply is creative...
Never heard this before...
I admit I haven't read all the replies, so apologies if someone had raised this point...
So according to Islam, you can eat anything from the sea. I repeat anything... Now perhaps someone needs to investigate some see animals you'd realise that some will definatly eat anything!!!!!
Oh and that includes the sea-pig btw...
I would like to know the difference...
Oh most sea animals dont have nexks...
Then eat a sea pig. :)
you quote that "So according to Islam, you can eat anything from the sea. I repeat anything... Now perhaps someone needs to investigate some see animals you'd realise that some will definitely eat anything!!!!!"
there's no need to reason and investigation or justification. its simple instruction.
four clear instruction
-do not eat pig
-and eat anything form the sea.
-eat halal if animal is on the land...
-no drugs and alcohol.
so if it's a sea pig..then eat the sea pig. :)
and if its just the pig(on land) then don't eat it.
and if people don't want to follow these rules. then don't follow it. it ok the world isn't gonna end if everyone don't follow it. :D
hope tht helps.
Ah basically what I was hinting at, is that to solve the problem for muslims not eating pigs, they can dump pigs in the sea then eat it..,.
that applys for any other un-halal food...
Interesting. hrmm..... i don't see there was a 'problem' for muslim not eating pig or un-halal food to start with. Personally i wouldn't eat pork if they were dumped in the sea.
heheh..i accidentally ate it a few times. they don't taste good. :S im not loosing out on anything by not eating it. but that is just my personal encounter on pork.
i think muslims would have eaten pig or un-halal food/ beverage if they want to( and i know some do). Like there is no compulsion on religion, there is no compulsion to follow any rules if people don't want to.
reasons/ proof, will always cloud our already narrow vision to see beyond illusion. illusions that we think are facts and truth.
According to Imam Shafi'ee all sea creatures with the
exception of a frog are Halaal.
Imam Malik (R.A) is of the opinion that all sea
creatures with the exception of sea-pig are Halaal.
(Dars-e-Tirmidhi - Hazrat Mufti M. Taqi Usmani Sb.
Page 279, Vol 1)
According to Imam Abu Hanifah (R.A) all marine animals
with the exception of fish are Haraam. Lobsters and
crabs will therefore not be permitted according to
Imam Abu Hanifah (R.A).
Concerning prawns, there is difference of opinion
among our Noble Ulama (R.A) as to whether it is a fish
or not. Some Ulama are of the opinion that prawns are
fish and thus Halaal while other Ulama have said that
it is not a fish.
Hazrat Mufti Syed Abdur-Raheem Saheb Lajpuri (R.A) is
of the opinion that prawns are fish. He has quoted a
number of proofs to substantiate his view. (Fatawaa
Rahimiyyah, Page 258, Vol. 7)
Hazrat Hakeemul Ummat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (R.A)
was also of the opinion that prawns are fish. (Imdadul
Fatawaa, Page 101 Vol. 4)
Yes. Agree with all of you. WE are NOT afraid of pig or pork. It was a command from GOD not to eat them. And for some good reasons too. The main reason, they are, by far, the MOST UN-hygenic animals ever known to mankind. And proven, their meat are the cause of major diseases and are also high in fats and cholestrol. So mcbabi please do not misjudge us for not eating pork as cowardly, instead pls respect our religion.
On a second thought I think that I encourage muslims not to eat pork and follow god's ORDERS...
In fact I hope that Muslims stick to the opinion that all marine food is "haram" except fish... And I hope some "wahabee" comes up with less restrictive definition of fish, so that the "haram" is wider..
Since we are facing major resouces crisis, (if we aren't we will sooner or later) this approach would hopefully delay Starvation of other ppl...
And I hope that when we have less resources, Muslims wont change thier minds...BEcause God wanted it so...
Till then, I'll enjoy my food..
Cheers
EATING PORK IS NOT ONLY SIN (FOR MUSLIMS) BUT ALSO SICKNESS
Muslims abstain from eating pork in adherence to the Quranic injunction which states: “Forbidden to you for (food) are: dead meat, blood and the flesh of the swine, and that which has been invoked in the name other than Allah.” (Chapter 5: Verse 4)
Such prohibition is also found in the Bible: “The pig also because it is a splitter of the hoof but there is no cud. It is unclean for you. None of their flesh must you eat and carcass you must not touch.” (Deuteronomy 14: 8)
Islam has laid down the foundation for the best approach in keeping good health. In the Holy Quran, Allah exhorts the believers to select the best food and to stay away from any harmful food to maintain good health: “Let him find out which is the best food (to be had).... Eat of the best foods We have provided for you.” (Chapter 18: Verse 19; Chapter 7: Verse 160 )
The main purpose of a True Religion must be to build an ideal community in this world; a religion that promotes moral, political and economic well-being; social harmony and peace, as well as good health of its believers or followers. Health means the physical and mental well-being and freedom from diseases and pain. There are several passages in the Bible articulating that because of sin (a transgression of the law of God), God afflicted human beings with maladies (Psalms 103: 3; Exodus 15: 26 and Psalms 107: 16-20). Islamic instructions and teachings espousing health consciousness have scriptural and scientific support.
MEDICAL ASPECT OF THE PROHIBITION
Abstention from eating pork is a measure to safeguard health.
All types of animals are lawful to be eaten whether those living on land or in the water, except those animals specifically forbidden in the Holy Books revealed by Allah and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with clear and well-defined injunctions. Pig belongs to the forbidden animals, and is not allowed to be eaten by the believers. Of all the domestic animals, pig is the most avaricious, eating almost everything dirty, including human excreta. It is a very lazy animal and the cradle of harmful germs. Its meat serves as a carrier of diseases to mankind. It is this very reason that made it unfit for human consumption.
BIBLICAL ASPECT OF THE PROHIBITION
Old Testament: The Jews and the different Christian sects and denominations believe in the Old Testament. Adherents of other religions alleged that the prohibition was already superseded by the New Testament. This cogent argumentation is inconclusive. No one can specifically point out that Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) lifted the prohibition. On the contrary, he upheld it he declared: “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets: I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.” (Matthew 5:17)
Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) was obviously referring to the existing Law of his time, the Mosaic Law, in which the Law prohibiting pig as article of food is mentioned. (Leviticus 11:7-11) “As for any beast that is a splitter of the hoof but is not a former of the cleft and not a chewer of the cud, they are unclean for you. Everyone touching them will be unclean.” (Leviticus 11:26)
In addition, the book of Prophet Isaiah said: “Who sit in tombs, and spend the night in secret places who eats swine's flesh and broth of abominable things is in their vessels; ... These are a smoke in my nostrils, a fire that burns all the day.” (Isaiah 65:4,5)
New Testament: Despite the Biblical injunction prohibiting pork as food, still people of other religious persuasions insist on finding ways and reasons to justify their consumption of prohibited animals, arguing that said Biblical prohibition was already superseded in the New Testament when, in certainly, no one can specifically point out that Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) indeed lifted the prohibition. On the contrary, he declared: “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17 )
The fact is, we will find in Mark 5:1-20, that Jesus (peace be upon him) even permitted the foul spirits (evil spirits) possessing a man to enter into the herb of swine. Since the flesh of pig is unlawful for the Jews to eat and since it is considered unclean (Leviticus 11:7-8) consequently, the Jews are not to keep or raise them. This Biblical account states that Jesus (peace be upon him) punished the owners of the swine, destroyed their unlawful livelihood and at the same time showed that pig is the habitat of unclean spirits.
The only provision in the New Testament alluded to their argument is in Act 10: 10-16. Without reading the whole context, one would be inclined to interpret it to mean that God abrogated His previous command found on Deuteronomy 14:3-8. An alleged apparition of Peter on Acts 10: 11-16 is alleged to supersede Deuteronomy 14:3-8, however, nowhere in the Bible is it mentioned that Peter actually slaughtered and ate the unclean animals he saw in his apparition.
The correct interpretation of this apparition was shown to him in Acts 10: 25-28. Acts 10: 11-16, therefore, carries an allegorical connotation, referring explicitly to the Gentile nations or non-Jewish nations. Peter was told not to call the Gentiles common and unclean because God’s mercy, blessing and forgiveness also encompass the non-Jews and life eternal also awaits the penitent.
In the Bible, Jesus (peace be upon him) likened to a dog and pig those people whom after receiving divine teaching failed to profit from them and abuses them for self-serving purposes: “Do not give holy to dogs — they will only turn and attack you. Do not throw your pearls in front of pigs — they will only trample them underfoot.” (Matthew 7: 6)
The New Heavens and the New Earth
The book of Isaiah 66:1-24 is an oracle of the new heavens and the new earth prepared for the believers. Within the context, God condemns people’s practices such as eating the flesh of pigs, reptiles, and rats. “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating swine’s flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together says the Lord.” (Isaiah 67:17 RSV)
Therefore, the prohibition on the eating of unclean animals was not abrogated during the New Testament’s times. God will still punish the transgressors in the fire that will never quench. This will occur during the new heavens and the new earth.
MUSLIMS FOLLOW THE DIVINE LAW
Last Testament: The Verdict of the Last Testament (the Holy Quran) on prohibition of pork Islam means “submission to the will and command of Allah” and a person who embraced Islam is called “Muslim” which means “one who accepts and submits himself to the will of God. A Muslim is obliged to be clean -- spiritually, mentally and physically.
Abstention from eating flesh of swine is one of the obligations a Muslim must observe to attain purity of the soul and of the human nature. The believers in Islam sincerely believe in the Holy Quran as the Word of God, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which says: “Allah has forbidden you only what dies of itself and blood and the flesh of swine and that over which any other name than that of Allah has been invoked.” (Chapter 16: Verse 115 )
We should bear in mind that the abstention from eating pork by the Muslims is based on hygienic grounds and of the cultivation of purity of character.
Pork is not poisonous as to kill people right on the spot but latent. It destroys slowly. It is certainly not as nourishing as any other meat and it causes prolonged sufferings. Pondering on the wisdom of the saying “health is wealth” will lead one to better living and prosperity. The last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “There are two blessings which many people lose: health and the free time for doing good.... The stronger believer (in health) is more blessed and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer.”
From what we have read from the Scriptures above and the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about health and the flesh of the swine, we now come to the conclusion that eating of swine flesh or pork is both sin and sickness. Therefore, we Muslims must protect ourselves for it is a fact that health is a trust and best blessing bestowed upon us by Allah.
