Q. Hawker food price can only go up ?

The price of oil and foodstuff has come down quite a bit, but cooked food prices at hawker centers largely remains the same. Has anybody come across hawkers who have reduced their prices lately ? Where to get value for money hawker food ?

Salaam ,

I often eat out and i noticed that hawker prices does remain the same and some even increases their price claiming due to the rise of food prices.
I admit everything is rising nowaday, its hard to eat at places where the prices are cheaper.
The only place that i find is cheap and not bad is at the food court at my workplace in kaki bukit. Just today my lunch which consist of 4 dishes cost only $2.50 - INDEED VALUE FOR MONEY.
But outside, even Nasi Lemak cost $2.50 now at some places.

2.50 for 4dishes is really value for money. i wanna work there too! =p

i am currently working in cbd area. it used to be 4bucks for 2meat+1veg kind of meal but now its 5.50 for the same dishes.
i nearly fainted.
now i bring home-cooked food to work. =D

though sometimes, i wonder how come those non-halal can sell cheap food. for example, there's a non-halal shop which sells hainanese chicken rice for $1.50 only.

No answer abt hawker food. :(

I dono whay you guys are complaining. I reckon it's still cheaper than Australia. Try $10 for a plate of chicken rice. and that is under the 'cheap' rate.

Asker's comment:

Hmm .... , $2.50 at Kaki Bukit, $5.50 at CBD area and $10.00 chicken rice in Australia. I guess the location matters a lot.

I have also noticed some non-halal food stall selling at cheaper prices, as Thira had mentioned. I guess they benefited from economies of scale.

If prices go up any further, or our salary got cut, (If we got retrenched, it would be a different story altogether. We may then go into food business. If you cannot beat them, join them) we may have no choice but to 'ta pau' (pack) our lunch from home.

Hmm..money in Singapore is a sensitive stuff. In a mind of people today, where "easy goes as money goes" has a huge affect on the way people sell their food.

From food rental costs, availability and accesibility of food prices and also competition; all these weighs alot of the people who are into the F n B business. For example CBD area stall rentals are expensive; the cheapest I go so far, unless if any, is the ones for exammple at Lucky plaza.

I guess we have to keep up with the times. Like z says, with the economy downturn, who knows. My concern goes with the poorer countries and those that are affected with diseases and epidemic causes, I am sure they have much to give our attention to...
