According to the Hanafi Madhab(school of thought) ,its not permitted as its not a fish which have fins and scales.
However, the three school of thought i.e. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali, prawns and other seafood of the like is permissible, irrespective of it being a fish or not.
Generally, in Singapore (and south east Asia) where the general Muslim follows the Shafi'i school of thought, eating squid or seafood is Halal, except for those sea creatures that can live in both land and sea. Here are some reading material. There's more detail exceptions, which you can read from the following links.
good that you ask this question. for those who are not aware of this. they can now keep this in mind when having food with their muslim friend who are following the Hanafi school of thought.
p.s: for more expert opinion please refer to a fatwa bank. Although most of the links are form scholar. (i'm not a scholar :) )
enjoy the read.

Q.) What is the Shariah ruling according to the Hanafi fiqh regarding squid? [Zain Admani]
A.) From seafood, only fish is halal for us. Rasulullah said, 'Two carions are made halal for us; Fish and locust.' (Mishkaat vol.2 pg.361).
Fish is classified as a Vertebra. Squid is not vertebras, hence, not permissible. Some Ulama are of the opinion that shrimps, etc. are fish, therefore, permissible. Due to the differences of opinion, it is best to adopt Taqwa and abstain from eating shrimps, etc. but they cannot be regarded as swine meat which is expressly haram.
