Ramadhan Around the World
insyaallah. i will be in the Netherlands in august to study. will be interesting to share/document my first Ramadhan/'Idil Fitr in a foreign land alone.
i can foresee myself finding it hard to wake up for sahur already.. =)
oh and any muslims in netherlands (or nearby countries) here? will need the all the help i think.
In the USA, if you are not living in a Muslim community, it becomes a challenge going through Ramadan as there will be a constant barrage of questions from others. Alhamdulilah, there is Hikma in this as well. Once, a friend heard about fasting and agreed that it will be good for him to try in order to loose some weight. Alhamdulilah, he found it better than paying the slimming companies the money with no results. However, he did not convert but is pursuing more knoweledge in Islam.
Apologies for the delay. Here is some info as promised:
In Australia, there is a substantial muslim community. it is nearing 10% of the total population now. In melbourne specifically, there are pockets of suburbs densely populated with muslims.
At the mosques and university prayer halls, timetables are usually given out before ramadhan. Sadaqa and Fitra / Zakat are also collected before Eid in the mosques.
I have not come across any radio station alerts for maghrib, or any special radio programmes for muslims or islam for that matter. most people i know would have the athan software installed on their computers and know its time for maghrib from there.
Regarding food, the community esp. asians do make an effort to make special treats and goodies. Friends and family invite others for iftar occasionally. I remember one year in uni, when i was staying with 3 other housemates. we invited about 20 other friends and uni-mates for iftar to our house. We prepared a lot of different foods, people also got some of their own prepared food and it was very good and enjoyable.
There is lots of controversy every year with the starting day of ramadhan and eid. some people follow the official islamic council here and others await reports of the moon sighting.
Australia is multicultural and in the 5 years that I have been here and celebrated ramadhan and eid, the best ones were when i was in university. it was good having a group of friends and the muslim families living close by. The islamic society of the university organised iftar's every friday and also the eid prayer and some food and a place to gather and wish each other. Some years there was soccer games and other family activities also organised.
once i moved out of uni, i would contact friends to know where eid prayers were taking place and go there.
The feeling you get in say singapore, middle east or asia is not really there as you can be isolated a bit here in australia and not be in a group of brothers and sisters to go through the experience and celebrate ramadhan together.
