The good thing or should I say the advantages of it with respect to the other rituals is that it can be done almost anytime I am awake. I'm told that Zikir can be done anytime of the day regardless of my activities, so over the years I've practiced Zikir anytime when I feel like it.
If there's someone beside me and I don't want to be seen mumbling like a senile person, I just do it quietly in my heart. This I feel is the best advantage of Zikir because I can remember Allah and praise Him and even the person next to me won't know it.
Another thing I want to add is that whenever I feel tired during work and if I take a few moment to pause and do Zikir, I always feel refreshed and get a little boost of energy. I don't know know why, maybe its just in the mind or maybe its God's gift to me for remembering him. Wallahu'alam.
Zikir to me is good for the soul. sort of refreshing. It's good we constantly keep in touch with Allah so that we are not absorb by the world activities.
the best time to zikir is when you are alone regardless time or place. not when we are in a group. if in a group in my opinion it will become riak (show off).
to me zikir also the time we dialogue with allah and it's best when no one notices.
just my humble tots.syukran
Salaam to all of you.
I never thought of Zikir ( or dhikr ) that way. It's a refreshing angle i might add. I'm going to be honest here about how i feel about it regardless of what people might think about me :)
Zikir / dhikr , (Utterance of the tongue with certain supplication from the Quran) is very important indeed. However i'll like to expand on the concept of Zikir to a wider scope than just sticking onto the supplications. the following short article explains it nicely.
http://www.geocities.com/mutma...
What i like abt it:
I look forward to doing Zikir/ Dhikr in the mosque especially after Tarawih prayers. The imams recites it quickly and all of us will follow him just as quickly. Honestly most of the time i have to rush so fast that i have to jumble all the words together. It almost therapeutic and trance like.
What i dislike:
It puts me to sleep sometimes or even boring. Especially during Ramadan in Australia where we hardly get enough sleep because of the timings for Isyak and Fajar.
On my own however i'm less enthusiastic or inspired in reciting Zikir/ Dhikr. Since Zikir/ Dhikr is after all 'the remembrance of allah' , I actually enjoy 'talking' to Allah and reflecting on the many blessings he have poured on to me and my family. Inshallah.
A more in depth look/ study on what dhikr/ Zikir is to share:-

W'salaam.
Zikir is a sunnat. But as a muslim myself, I prefer to read exegesis of holy Quran by different commentators or books on islamic fiqh or tawhid, rather than zikir for 1000 times in allahu akbar for example. Knowledge is wisdom, and a tool of faith, not zikir.
To me also rather than spending 'overtime' to zikir at home or masjid, it is better to attend religious class or read religious articles or lectrues in mosque of web-online. Most muslims,in fact, take for granted since Quran is arabic, hence the main impt part of Islam is to learn to recite and memorize the verses or suras. Any learned muslim or non-muslim would say it is unrealistic; imagine a person reciting or speaking the language of a book without KNOWING the meaning or context he's reading???? People either laugh or think we are clowns, which unfortunately, many muslims are in that position...<sigh>
In a nutshell, it's is ok to do or practise zikir, but dont take it as a way for everyday life. Islam is not founded by promoting long zikir and many praying on a day, but through the understanding of (the God) Allah's revelation, his law, his existence and wisdom through His Signs and Knowlege the Al-Quran. Subhanallah alhamdullilah (Glory and All praise be to Allah )
Fariz, for your added info if you are not aware; your activity of reading or learning the Holy Quran whether alone or in group is also considered as Zikir. Attend a religous class in a normall class or a mosque is also considered Zikir activity. Meaning and Activity of Zikir is wide. Doing your prayer is also Zikir. But I think the question asked is more on what we like or dislike about the normal understanding of Zikir i.e. suplications we do in private or in group.
Salaam bmtalib and Fariz,
I feel the same way abt people who spend their lives memorising the quran and not understanding a word of it. I think it's such a gift and patience to memorise the quran but on the other side of things, we at leasat need to know what is the implication of the meaning of translation that we are reading.
like Faiz said Zikir/ Dhikr has a wider scope like in the links i provided earlier.
w'salaam
Salam Sultana,
I think its alright for people to memorise the Quran but do not know the meaning of it. Its better than not reading it at all. I also think its one of the great miracle of the Holy Book. People do not understand it but yet they can memorise it! People of all nations can memorise it! Don't you think its a great miracle?
Of course it will be better if they understand it but I think more efforts and guidance are needed to achieve this.
Salaam sultana and bmtalib,
Yeah.. i agree :) It's good to know different opinions from other in matter of zhikir. There are times when zhikir is best do alone, and in groups. I cant disgree with bmtalib. For alone it is narrated in Hadith of Fiqh Al Sunnah 064:"The purpose of Zhikir is to purify the hearts and souls and to awaken the human conscience.."Qur'an says, "And establish regular prayer, for prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds, and remembrance of Allah is the greatest thing in life, without doubt.'' Qur'an 29.45
And in groups it is also in Fiqh Al Sunnah 4.101 where Al-Qurtubi said, "Gatherings of zhikr are the gatherings for knowledge and admonition, those in which the Word of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger, accounts of our righteous predecessors, and sayings of the righteous scholars are learned and practiced without any addition or innovation, and without any ulterior motives or greed."
As i mentioned previously, I am used to the study of Quran/haidth translations and exegesis. Haha well my dad call me a "modern muslim", funny didnt get wat he mean all the time...maybe he prefers me to do the typical zhikir everyday;reciting the yasin every thurs, munakkib, marhaban, berzanji, taraweh etc..My work and circle of friens is mostly non-muslims, mainly Catholics or Christians and Buddhists, and usually towards religious discussions one needs the proper knowledge and charismatic approach to a good explanation and replies. AND a good and extensive knowledge of their religion too..or else u lose ur conversation easily n get urself embarrased, a typical and common thing that applies to the common muslims in singapore strangely haha..just happen yesterday my muslim friend cant differentiate between catholics and christian methodists when talking to a christian friend...
Did you know that our soul understands the Quran when you read it. The food is for the soul. We are so caught up with the fact that we have not understood it when the fact is that your soul is happy wheneve you read it. Hence we should encourage people to read it regardless of whether they understood what they have read. Insya Allah reading with understanding hopefully makes you a even better person. But think about those who understood it and yet do not follow. What a great sin you fall into ....
Can anyone show me proof of zikir being done by the Companions, tabiin or tabiut tabiin, the salafusoleh,in a group?
eg: you have 10 men reciting Subhanallah together, uttering the word in unison.
Yes there is MDSG. As far as hadis is concerned.I relate to you the hadith(s) reference ad below;
Fiqh-us-Sunnah Book 64. "Azh-Zhikr ".
----------------------------------
Section : Excellence of Assemblies of Zhikr
-------------------------------------
2 examples are given below;
1)Ibn 'Umar reported, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'When you pass by a garden of Paradise, avail yourselves of it.' The Companions asked, 'What are the gardens of Paradise, O Messenger of Allah?' The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, 'The assemblies or circles of zhikr. There are some angels of Allah who go about looking for such assemblies of zhikr, and when they find them they surround them'."
2) Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "When any group of men remember Allah, angels surround them and mercy covers them, tranquillity descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him."
Fariz, you need to understand the syarah of the hadiths you qouted.
Read my question again, please.
What you quoted is different, as explain in other posts in this question.
Please benefit the muslims and non-muslims reading this post on this syarah please, and on which source? For the benefit, let's try not to assume the readers are muslims. Only then I can find a suitable answer based on which point of view I can emphasis on.
Sorry for the trouble, MDSG.
