Tarikat is a grouping. In Islam we are supposed to ask, learn and discover the wonders of Allah s.w.t. Getting stuck to one point of view is not that great. If you were open to exploring, maybe you may find your answers elsewhere. Don't defy your parents but be open to other groupings and Insya'Allah, He will guide you to His beauty. One shoe cannot fit everyobe. Each has his own needs and 1 group will not be able to meet everyone's needs. If it does, Alhamdulilah. Nevertheless, Islam teaches us to ask, to learn and to follow with understanding. Without understanding, it becomes blind faith and people can be misled by this blind faith. I wish you well in your road to discovery. May Allah guide you. Ameen.

Model Behavior of the Prophet (Kitab Al-Sunnah)
Dawud :: Book 40 : Hadith 4579
Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The Jews were split up into seventy-one or seventy-two sects; and the Christians were split up into seventy one or seventy-two sects; and my community will be split up into seventy-three sects.
---------------------------------------------------

a sect is like a tarikat. Please ask someone knowledgeable to help you understand the hadith above.

Afflictions and the End of the World
Bukhari :: Book 9 :: Volume 88 :: Hadith 206
Narrated Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman:

The people used to ask Allah's Apostle about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said, "O Allah's Apostle! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?" He said, "Yes." I said, 'Will there be any good after that evil?" He replied, "Yes, but it will be tainted (not pure.)'' I asked, "What will be its taint?" He replied, "(There will be) some people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds and disapprove of some others." I asked, "Will there be any evil after that good?" He replied, "Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire." I said, "O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?" He said, "They will be from our own people and will speak our language." I said, "What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?" He said, "Stick to the group of Muslims and their Imam (ruler)." I said, "If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam (ruler)?" He said, "Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state."

No sultana, tarikat has nothing affiliated to sectarian or denomination. Think of it of more like a method of spiritual enlightenment through certain methodology or ritual invocations. In the website, ppl refer tarikat as Islamic fraternities, mystic sects or brotherhoods. By derict translation it means "path" or "direction"...

Sufism has a better standing over the evolvement in the concept and explanation over the tarikat. The word tarikat also exist in Zoroastrism religion, but in a different light than Islam. I heard of this nasubandi group for tarikat from my dad before, my dad has a book dealing with tarikat but it's in malay.

In Singapore, tarikat is common to the muslims though I exclude myself from those groups. . Hmm not my type , i prefer quranic science and comparative religion.

I'm quite busy around now entertaining pro anti-muslim stuff/ppl <again..>, while relaxing from my studies and learning islam this december. Now i'm 'entertaining' on the net with some 'misfits' with the seventy-two virgins theory in the Quran <sigh>. Anti-muslim propaganda never ends....

Did Nabi Muhammad shalallahu alaihi wa salaam ever endorsed any tarikat, or mahzab for that matter?

Hi all,

MDSG, the word "endorsed" is a bit misleading if you put the tarikat in that ward the word is applied. Don't confuse mazhab or tarikat as kind of denominations of Islamic belief like other religions are facing .

The tarikat is not a law, jurispundence nor a rule. Tarikat is where people sit together and praise their lord by zhikr(invocations of praising Allah). Allah rewards His believers who praised Him (Quran 33.35 and 3:191). So muslims are encouraged to praise Allah in many ways, whether group or single, sitting or standing. However, transgress in the practise of religion is to be avoided (Quran 11:112). There is with respect no need for endorsement from hadith, as the hadith is suposed to support the Quran in the first place, without contradictions or interpolation and inaccuracy to the techonology facts today.. But if an example is needed, the Fiqh ul- Sunnah on the chapter of Ad-Zhikr defines the permissability for invocations as encouraged by the prophet pbuh. Tarikat is of such form of similairityin regards to the invocations and zhikr. It's ok unless you transgress the invocations beyond the permissability of Islam.

I will deal the case on mazhab later, God's willing.I'm busy with work now.

Fariz, I suggest you join a tarikat and get to know it up close and personal. I fear your knowledge of the inner workings of a tarikat is questionable.

So lets say if today, ALL the hadiths are made to dissappear, and no one have any knowledge of it, Fariz, do you know how to worship Allah?

MDSG,

Er not that I do not want to anwer your last entry..but the topic is tarikat MDSG. I will not go off topic on concept of worshipping Allah, so as to respect the topic of discussion.
But I suggest, please read or consult the scholars(ustaz of sheikhs) or learned muslim scholars on the relationship of Quran and hadith, on how the jurispundence of law and sunnah is developed through the two. The topic is big on its own, so I feel it is not my right to answer this topic despite my own discussions,questions in such topic before with (teachers)ustaz and relevant books.

For everyone,

But be it on the islamic concept of tenants of faith, belief or law(sunnah) or pracise, the foundation of Islam is the Quran which is the Furqan( criterion of right and wrong) and the hadith(traditions) as the commentary o the former. So long as the practice of tarikat does not break the rules or transgress the two,, and agreed by the true and honest learned muslim scholars around, the decision to follow or not belongs to anyone.

if the best generations of Islam does not have a need for a tarikat, should we follow any?

The Book Pertaining to the Merits of the Companions (Allah Be Pleased With Them) of the Holy Prophet (May Peace Be Upon Him) (Kitab Al-Fada'il Al-Sahabah)
Muslim :: Book 31 : Hadith 6159
'A'isha reported that a person asked Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as to who amongst the people were the best. He said: Of the generation to which I belong, then of the second generation (generation adjacent to my generation), then of the third generation (generation adjacent to the second generation).
