Salaam all,

The video linked above actually mentioned quite a number of QnA topics. The brother of Islam that is interviewed is Brother Yasir Qadhi. A quite good video for those who are interested in Islamic issues and the point of view from different muslims scholars :)

Music as seen across Islam
----------------------------------

Music is formed in many parts of life. Music is in fact a composition of sounds and commonly with rhythm and pitch . Even in reciting Quran, a form of rhythmic language is observed in the revelation, which soothes the ears and attracts anyone who is interested the recitation :) To say the all forms music is all haram, IMO, is like kinda weird, with the way the nature and species behave to responds towards forms or music, or sounds. Music is a general word, so I find it a big subject to talk about in the post..

So, IF music is used in Islamic purposes like nasyeed, i think this promotes the well being of Islamic culture and spiritual strength and healing, as long as the use of music is not transgressed or overdone in Islam. For example there are some who uses music which causes a person to fall into trance, which muslims should avoid.

The word, music, and the books of Psalms?
-------------------------------------

Now the most perplexing question; if generally all music is forbidden as told by "some of our scholars",then how do we answer regarding to the former scripture, the Psalms, which was given by revelation by Prophet Dawood a.s by God?? The Psalms in Hebrew meaning "song", and/or "music". Confirm this by checking the meaning at the web or just ask any Jewish and Christian followers to confirm this sentence . IF any form of music IS haram, how do muslims answer to the non-muslims on that subject? THAT is why I say using music is haram is kinda weird. Maybe the wrong application or practise of music in culture and society is seriously considered as non-islamic, but please, not by the generality of it. It would only give us a 'slap' by non-muslims, especially by Christians and Jewish believers, for this reason of the "haram" of music.

Conclusion
----------

I hope my opinion is considered. I am not a scholar, and my answers are based on my learning from muslims teachers(ustaz) and knowledge of other religions. My words are words of opinions, not conclusions :)

Finally, research, then ask and confirm with the scholars, and lastly decide for yourself with this topic at the end of the day. This question differs from culture and practise of Islam in different parts of muslim life, so let's us not be too "self-righteous" to judge other muslims in a rush, unless what is obviously set down in the Quran, the criterion. Sorry I am not quick to mention hadith, as different mazhabs or sectarians have different views on this. Hope my replies helps...

Salaam... :)

Urgent

HI, sorry about the fourth paragraph is my last previous post..there's a huge error in the phrase,

"..the Psalms..which is given by revelation BY Prophet Dawood a.s.."

IT should be "to" not "by", the the correct one will be;

"..the Psalms...which is given by revelation TO Prophet Dawood a.s by God?..."

Sorry for the mistakes..my apology on behalf on all :(

Assalamualaikum,

Here's a sound hadith.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v:

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari:

that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

We should not say that something is haram unless it is explicitly mentioned in the Quran or hadith. If not, abstantial is preferred. Everytime someone says something is haram, please get them to show you explicit prrof before we too jump on the bandwagon.

I am doing my dakwah work by helping new converts. Guess what, each time they come back with a new input on haram from their Muslim brothers. This is indeed a misdeed on the part of his fellow Muslim brothers who keep harping on a point of view without clear eveidence from the Quran & hadiith. Everyone is entitled to their views and they will have to answer, but please encourage the converts, don't make it harder than it already is for them to embrace a new religion. Wasalaam.
