Shopping for religious books

Salaam to all :) ,

Would like to know if you guys/ladies have any ideas on good websites that provide good english islamic books. Singapore doesnt seem to provide a variety, and I'm either stuck to the English Islamic Bookshop at Darul Arqam or the muslimedia bookshop/toko haji hashim at the Galaxy, or the wardah books at busorah st. Wanted to contact and order from malaysia islamic booksdistributer like Malaysia (e.g Saba distributer) but their response is nil till now through mail <sigh...>

It's been a while since I been viewing this website (exam's coming :( ) and seems that I'm a bit busy..Thanks for any advise in advance :)

Hi,

um..thanks for the link though I am very much interested in buying and ordering books online. Wonder if there is any other affliated bookstorein Singapore apart that I mention above. Or online order of English Islamic online books.

The closest recommendation is from my friend of mine and that is through OnlineIslamic Bookstore.com, which is in US. A good website with many English books and it accepts paypal. But U.S. seems too far so it would be much better if if I could order books nearer to our region.

Sorry for being too define in my suggestion as I have some interest in some Islamic books not sold in Singapore either because out of stock or not in high demand. :(

oh yea also another point to note. As far as my experience in Islamic book...if you want the kinda books you are talking abt, they are mostly in countries like US, UK or Canada. these are the countries where Islam is very active and thriving. I can try to find something in Australia as well.

Distance shouldn't be a matter when it come to purchasing stuff online. I myself had purchase a few books and other products tht i wanted from US. It's by mail anyways and doesn;t take tht long to arrive. If you want something around this region, which i assume around South East Asia, it will be challenging to get the kinda quality books you want and plus in English.

It's good u are straight abt wht you want so that we know what exactally you are looking for. I'll see if i can find anything around this region, but most likely will find alot overseas.

If you are open to tht possibilities, im sure you will get something interesting.

Hi sultana and malt,

thanks for the help. Just checkin the U.S Islamic website jst now. Seems that most of them support the international mail delivery shipping by USPS or UPS. I realize the UPS is expensive, about $70 ( oh My God haha)..guess im kinda shocked by the price coz never bought islamic books before, only computer softwares :( ..

I have my particular interest lately to dwelve into Quranic sciences ( which relates the preservation and history recitation and readings of Quran through time) and also comparative religion series ( to understand other religions, not to confuse with debates or rebuttals betwenn interfaiths...though I could easily read them elsewhere). There are amazing websites like altafsir.com but a reference book can be of lovely help. Have read ones written by Ahmad Von Denfer and Taqi Usmani but needed better reference.

I am thinking of using debit card directly to pay for online shopping rather than paypal transaction. Anybody used this transaction to pay in Us before? Is it safe? Im a bit skeptical to fraudulance im afraid, sorry for my bad habit :( Im havin my engineering exam on 13th and 19th, im sorry if any of my reply be late :)

Salaam to all :)

I found this website very helpful for buying good Islamic Books. They surprised me with the competetive prices and speed of delivery. I got my books ordered via their USA office and books shipped from Karachi, Pakistan reached Dubai, U.A.E in four days. The payment by Credt Card was secure.

As for debit cards...i have not done so and personally i will not buy things online with my debit card. In my opinion i don;t think it's save. I always use a credit card. As long as you pay you Credit card on time...it will not cause you any problem or interest. I only buy something when i know i have the money right now to buy it.

Hope it helps.

Thanks sultana, I ordered some books from onlineislamicstore.zaman's post also quite good (http://www.albalagh.net/bookst.../) maybe will order through it when I have some other past time.

One of the books I ordered is the book, "Reliance of the
Traveller", it's about the shafi'i jurispundence of law (fiqh as we termed it). A very good book, finally gt to order it. It's a classic and a good reference book for those who wanted a learn about the daily obligations in conduct and rule for everyday muslim in historical detail :)

You know, kinda wonder, why the variety of Islamic books in Singapore, especially in English is so limited compared to other countries such as U.S or U.K. ?

I've checked even the major bookstores in Singapore and islamic bookstores, and cannot help to notice the limited vareity amount in the choice of books we have for the muslims. This seems weird, as we supposed to among the major religions of the world apart from Christianity. Can't imagine who to blame, our muslim leaders, or muslims like ourselves?

Maybe I should post this question in a seperate posts... <sigh>.....

U wan free quick efficient downloads go to www.harun yahya.com - click english and downloads. if in KL try kinokumiya at KLCC or MPH at MdValley, many others are lembab and price differentials but lets not be blameworthy . Pray to Allaah swt alone and ask him. In S'pore try MUIS or Chinese Convert Association. Salam

Thanks rondaine and all who contribute to this post.

There are many useful, and also anti-islamic websites around the web easily. Hope everyone gets careful on getting the proper information on Islam from muslim or non-muslim sources.

I'm ok since I've been used to comparative religion. I remember getting a hold on a Quran translation by self-research and surfing. The translater is by Rev E.W Wherry (obviously a Christian) on www.archive.org. It's a translation and discourse by Christian scholar on Islam based on George Sale's translation (also a Christian), and, by the commentary and discourse of the e-book, seems Christian emphasized and non-Islamic. And of course, the book does not many good stuff about muslims rather the opposite..but kinda weird and deserve to ponder right guys/ladies...
...Quran for refutal on Islam by non-muslims for non-muslims ???? Well, it's still useful for comparative purposes...

You know, I kinda feel how much history has shaped Islam and the muslims all over the world. The fact that muslims survived strongly all these years while from the high critics or political/ideological propaganda, it's not suprising that Islam gets all the more attention compared to other religions all the time, well mostly the bad ones if they feel right to :)

Hi all....i find it difficult to find english books on islam too...i would love to read about how Islam rise in other countries like china, europe etc...i dunno where to find them except in the library...hurhur...

anyway, if u need to find english islamic books on other islamic aspect like al-quran, hadith, fiqh or other main islamic books that can be used as our guidance in daily life...u need to be very careful....Check the author...maybe can find the biography of the author first just to know who the person is...especially if the book is written by a non-muslim writer.

Maybe this should be a reminder to the others as well...because there are orientalis out there who write wrong facts and interpretations of hadith and main islamic books just to make those ignorant (jahiliyah) muslims out there confused and eventually questioned their own faith in Islam. The main objective of the orientalis is to destroy Islam itself....So DO be careful...There are also islamic books that are more incline to syi'ah...

ORIENTALIS- they are people who are kafiruns(non-muslims) but learned about Islam and did alot of research on Islam...then they write books on ISlam based on their research, judgement and own thinking and maybe conclusions.

for example - they stated the wrong facts or twist facts about our prophet NAbi Muhammad (s.a.w).

My ustaz has come across such books.

Na'udzubillahi min zalik.

Hi zizi,

Yeah, it's true. It's good to know that rise of oriental studies of muslims rise quite actively on around 19th century onwards. That's usually, I have read so far, the time where oriental studies on Islam gave a huge impact on Islamic awareness in the west then and today, which is sad :(

When I started reading oriental books due my interest in the development of Islam for my , quite shocked, if not impressed during my self-study. I discovered an enormous amount of literature the orientalists have written about Islam at the peak of their time, be it for a purpose of critic or their interest. For example, do you know they have written an own 'tafsir'(translation and discourse) of our very Quran ? The author was a Christian by the name of Rev W H Wherry. You can get a study of these books of few volume(s) at the National Library reference Level 7 in Singapore and also download it for free at www.archive.org. Also, suprisingly to me, have written an huge and extensive Encyclopedia of Islam ( 3 Vol) by collection of articles written by group of the best oriental scholars. B. Lewis etc...Other stuff include dictionaries, lexicon, translation and discourse of our enormous Islamic works on jurispundence...amazing and strange don't you think ?

By analyzing the impact in the history of oriental studies, I can't say the oriental scholars are to be blame fully for the misinformation, I guess at some time, they feel a huge desire to study Islam from a Christian/Western perspective. At that time, most muslims(and Asians) are either colonialized or disunited to challenge and influence the western literatures and idelogy from the beginning, which is to their advantage/disadvantage depending on their reasons. So they started to make their findings, observations and conclusions on Islam from their own perspective, together with their criticism and review and religious propoganda (if any), in their writings. That's where the tricky part happens between Islam-West relations , which later led to rise of this brand "orientalist" by muslims today, to signify the group of scholars they feel the cause of misconceptions and misunderstandings in Islam among the West.

I'm NOT bearing any hatred towards anyone who is westernized or western of course. But I guess, shouldn't the newer generation of young people start to open the hearts of studying the art and knowledge of science and history from their own perspective of culture and background? I'm more happy that there's more trend to blogging and threading discussion these days on the internet among the young; it really helps to close the misunderstanding and misintrepetation on everyone on a particular topic or knowledge :) Oriental studies today are still a key subject of reference today by western education in religious studies, but no longer served as fully authorative, since many know the books are not intrepeted evenly except for few books which is considered as scholarly researched by as little biased critic in it's perspective.

. But still, let us be careful of any oriental books we come to read across in the bookstore or internet. Lesss it your interest on comparative religion.

I found this book store and was pleasantly surprised at the prompt response and very reasonable rates. They have a secure payment gateway which was also good. The range of books is limited but they say they can get books published in India.

Worth a try.
