Salaam,

It would be better if you could bring a family member with you. A woman to travel alone to a foreign place is not encouraged.

Yes, alhamdulillah, the intention is good (I assume that you are helping out there). But your own safety comes first.

InshaAllah, you can find your answer here:

Safety is always the factor when traveling no matter if it's a woman or a man. In south Africa, crime rates are high and as far as i know it's dangerous there. (guns, rape and drugs) Think a south African would be able to clarify how dangerous it can be. I'm just basting my assumption about South Africa through documentary and movies.

If this single doctor will be meeting an organization to work with or living amongst a community, or being supported by a bunch of people who will be accommodating to this person's needs in terms of safety, living, working life..then i think it's an experience not to be missed.<--- this is my personal opinion.

However Islamically.. the general idea is women are to be accompanied by a 'mahram' ( a male relative whom she can't marry, father, husband, uncle, brother, some says a group of women too ) when traveling because it is assumed that she will be attacked and there's no one to protect her. Then there are technical details and differences of opinions on how long she can be traveling on her own or in what circumstances she can be on her own. Some opinions goes as far as the women being accompanied if she is out of her house!

Islam doesn't put in rules to cause difficulty to anyone. There are instance during the Prophet's time where by women did travel on their own only when it is safe. So in this case, the Muslim woman will have to consider if her safety will be compromise.
